Moving residence in later life: actively shaping place and wellbeing

Policy discourse favours the idea of “ageing in place” but many older people move home and into different kinds residential settings. This article extends understanding how relocation can promote as well diminish people’s well-being. Using relational understandings place capabilities (people’s freedoms opportunities to be do what they value) we explored well-being across trajectories 21 aged 65–91 years living diverse settings Scotland. We found that a array mattered for was often motivated by concerns secure “at-risk” valued activities relationships. Moving residence impacted several other capabilities, addition these, both, positively negatively. suggest capability approach offers valuable lens supporting through behavioural models late-life relocation.
